See below for Submission Forms

The Missing Persons program began in 2002 as a result of the passing of Texas Senate bill 1304.

This bill allowed the establishment of a missing persons DNA database at the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) within the UNT Center for Human Identification (UNTCHI). Since that time, funding through the State of Texas and National Institutes of Justice has allowed UNTCHI to assist in thousands of missing persons investigations across the country.

The UNTCHI Missing Persons Unit is part of an accredited laboratory specializing in DNA analysis of skeletal remains and other types of evidence for missing and unidentified person’s cases. Analysts are qualified in the testing and analysis of autosomal STRs, mini-STRs, Y chromosomal STRs, and mitochondrial DNA. Expert testimony services are provided as needed. UNTCHI is an NDIS participating laboratory. This allows UNTCHI to enter genetic profiles related to missing and unidentified person’s cases into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) so that the profiles can be searched against the appropriate indices.

UNTCHI reports in a simplified report format. By submitting evidence to the Forensic or Missing Persons Unit for analysis, the customer has agreed to receive simplified reports.

Missing and unidentified person’s cases rely on the availability of biological family references and/or samples previously collected and known to originate from a missing person.

The appropriate submission forms must accompany the submission of any sample to UNTCHI. If you are using a new UNTCHI DNA family reference collection kit, you will need to download the Family Reference Submission Form. The links to all forms are below. If you have any questions or need further assistance, contact an evidence custodian at 1-800-763-3147 or at missingpersons@unthsc.edu. The shipping address is
