UNTCHI Forensic Anthropology Unit

The Forensic Anthropology Unit was founded in 1986 as the UNT Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology and became part of UNTCHI in 2004.

The facility is housed within the Department of Biological Sciences on the Denton campus of the University of North Texas and occupies approximately 2500 square feet of secure, restricted-access space. The mission of the Unit is dedicated to the analysis of human skeletal remains within a medicolegal context. Forensic services are offered to State and local law enforcement agencies, Medical Examiners, Coroners, and Justices of the Peace by a staff of four forensic anthropologists with a combined professional experience of 70 years.

Services include:

Field recovery of forensically-significant human remains including: search, location, and the excavation of clandestine graves

Skeletal remains analysis to include: forensic significance, biological profiles, positive identifications, and trauma analyses

Expert testimony

In addition to forensic casework, the Forensic Anthropology Unit provides graduate academic training in forensic anthropology and professional training to law enforcement agencies and forensic pathologists. Research interests in forensic anthropology include challenges in ancestry assessment, thermobaric effects on human bone, skeletal trauma analysis, and the assessment of forensic significance using multispectral image analysis.
